THE HILLMANNS OF BROOKLYN
CHAPTER 14
1918
This was an April snow storm.
Rose tells us this picture of Marian was taken the previous Sunday when the weather had been fair. Marian was eight years old for most of 1918.
In 1918 Russia switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. The date went from February 1st to February 14th.
Herman and Rose.
Herman loves his daughter, you can see it.
Marian with a playmate.
Marian with sled.
In 1918 the U.S. Congress established time zones and approved daylight savings time.
The United States Postal Department began the first regular airmail service in the world between New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
In 1918 more than 100 waiters were taken into custody for poisoning restaurant customers in the Chicago Restaurant Poisonings. The poison was called Mickey Finn.
In 1918 an actress named Mammy Lou played a slave in a movie. She said she was 114 years old and had been a slave in Savannah.
Almost all little girls like to play dress up.
All dressed to go out. I can't tell if they are still living in Essex County, New Jersey or had moved back to Brooklyn. The stairs are on the correct side for the Brooklyn house.
The month is May, Marian and Rose are in Atlantic City, time for vacay. — in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Marian at the Gazebo
Marian on the beach.
Marian with a man she clearly knew. It could be her Uncle William.
Here we have Rose with a woman she clearly knew, perhaps she is related to the man who was with Marian.
Rose and Marian in a rickshaw.
In the Summer of 1918 there was a train wreck in Nashville that killed 101 people.
This is Atlantic City. In the Summer of 1918 the Emperor Nicholas and his family were murdered at Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg. Czar Nicholas' children took beautiful pictures.
WW1 solders. By August of 1918 30 million people died in the flu pandemic, which is twice as many people as died in the War.
In September the Hillmanns spent a day with Rose's family, the Siegeles.
Rose is on the left, best guess for the woman on the right is her sister Etta (Henrietta). In November of 1918 Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated and WW1 ended on the 11th hour, on the 11th day in the 11th month.
This is Rose's Dad, Henry. He was born in Alsace-Loraine, which was sometimes French, and sometimes German. Rose's Dad began his life as a German but he immigrated to the United States in 1860 at age 11. It's something to think about that he immigrated to the US at the start of it's Civil War and in 1918 his adopted country was at war with his native country.
Here is a picture of Rose's parents in their younger days. This picture was not contained within my Hillmann albums. I got this through photo sharing at Ancestry.com.
Marian and Rose in October. The Hillmanns of Brooklyn comes out on Tuesdays. Next week its 1919.
