CHAPTER 31

1926

It's 1926 and the summer between Marian's junior and senior year at Erasmus.  

It's a Manhattan Beach Day!

I'm so happy Marian decided to label this picture.

Cousin Dot, Herman's sister, Louise's, daughter, was a few years younger than Marian. This is the last picture I have of her. Dot's parents divorced.  Both parents abandoned their children, leaving Dot, and her sister, Ruth, with Granny Emma, who raised them.  I met descendants of Dot through Ancestry.com.  This resulted in my father's second cousin visiting.  We are also now FB friends.  How wonderful is the internet?

I don't know where we are..

But Herman and Marian are there.

It's the start of Marian's senior year

WEST POINT and CAPE MAY

Marian was between her Junior and Senior year in the Summer of 1926, and the Hillmanns did a lot that year. In this album we journey to Cape May and Westpoint.

How often are we reminded the manner in which areas are settled is geography (water)?

Behold the Hillmanns looking at a captured German Periscope from World War I which, at that time, was referred to as the "Great War".  Couple this with the fact both Herman and Rose's fathers were born in Germany and both their mother's were born to German immigrants.  

My father was born in 1942.  He said Herman, his grandfather told him that Herman was very unhappy when he started school, because the only language he spoke was German.  They spoke English in the schools of Manhattan, so Herman had to learn.  He found himself at a disadvantage.

My father also told me that after World War II Herman was ashamed to be German.

Meet Marian's First Boyfriend

In 1926 over 5 million people were unemployed in Europe.

Henry Ford announced the 40 hour work week (before that people worked more).

Route 66 was established

Rudolph Valentino died at age 31 of an infection, causing a frenzy. I wonder if Marian missed Valentino or if her mind was full of Billie

Marian wasn't too old, at 16, to enjoy playing in the Lazarus' back yard.
