Hillmanns 48 Pocono Manor and Smallwood

THE HILLMANNS OF BROOKLYN

CHAPTER 49

1934

The entire year in pictures.

The Hillmanns welcomed the new year at Pocono Mannor.

Winter Wonderland was a hit song in 1934.

The Hillmanns enjoyed their Winter Wonderland vacay while over in Europe the Nazi's passed the Law for the Prevention of Herediarily Diseased Offspring.

Pocono Manor is still open just as it was back in 1934 when the first Flash Gordon comic strip was published.

Marian Ice Skating. In 1934 Austria abolished jury trials.

The Harlem Theatre also opened in 1934.  I wonder if Marian went.

Pictures of Pocono Manor taken from Google.

Three months before Marian went to Smallwood, Bonnie and Clyde killed 2 highway patrolmen in Texas, about 3 months later they killed themselves. 1934 was a big year for dead criminals, also killed that year were Baby Face Nelson and John Dillinger.

Mrs. Smallwood. Smallwood is a developed lake side community. Copies of all the Smallwood photos were donated to the Smallwood Historic Society

I am guessing they took a boat to get to Smallwood.

Mauretanio. I'm not sure that's the name of the boat or the person. The only other time Marian went to Smallwood she was visiting the Lembecks. I wondered if this is Mrs. Lembeck.

The service worker reminds me of the movie Dirty Dancing.

I had the time of my life.

In 1934 the child custody trial of the young Gloria Vanderbilt began, it lasted seven weeks and ended with a compromise. Anderson Cooper is Gloria Vanderbilt's son.

Butt Shot

Al Hearn. Yes, I want to know what he looked like.

The beautiful people.

Al Hearn was definitely at Smallwood.

Before there was Kate plus 8 or Octomom there were the Dionne Quintuplets. They were born in 1934.

Al Hearn.

Last one of Al.

Merry Christmas at 1834 Caton Avenue. I don't know who lived there. Hillmanns albums come out on Tuesdays. Next week we join Marian on her honeymoon, guess who she married.

HILLMANNS 47 - Cuba

THE HILLMANNS OF BROOKLYN

CHAPTER 47

1933

Cuba

Marian stands on the deck of the Morro Castle on way to Cuba in 1933. Stormy Weather was a hit song. 16 months after this photo was taken, on September 8, 1934 a fire aboard this passenger liner, Morro Castle killed 134 people off the New Jersey coast.

Here she is enjoying herself with a cute guy.

King Kong premiered in 1933 at Radio City Music Hall which had just been built in 1932.

Also in 1933 the Nazis built their first concentration camp, Dachau.

I wonder if this car, or at least parts of it, are still running in Cuba.

Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba in 1492.  Construction on the fortress began in the 1760s when Spain and England were fighting over Florida and Caribbean islands.

The Hillmanns are enjoying their vacation as the world is going nuts.  Nazis are burning books.  Gandhi is hunger striking in protest.  Roosevelt declares the ownership of gold illegal.

The Depression did not seem to affect the Hillmanns, Herman worked for a boiler company, and had been employed there since the early 1900s. Marian was a fifth grade school teacher. Neither ever lost their job.

In 1898 the US Battleship Maine was blown up in Havana Harbor, costing 268 men their lives.  This was the beginning of the Spanish American War.

The explosion of the battleship Maine was withing the living memory of Rose and Herman.

Milton Stone and Marion

Morro Castle was completed in 1589

It looks a lot like our Capital.

I don't know who he is.

Hillmanns albums come out on Tuesdays. Next week we are back to playing with Marian and her friends stateside in Rockaway, Atlantic City and NYC
