Hillmanns 44

THE HILLMANNS OF BROOKLYN

CHAPTER 44

1931

Washington DC and Kentucky

In 1931

Rose and Herman took a trip to Washington DC and Kentucky to celebrate their wedding anniversary.  Marian was not with them.  By this time she was a young, elementary school teacher.

In 1931 The Star Spangled Banner was adopted as the United States National Anthem.

In 1931 The millennialist Bible Student Movement adopted the name Jehovah's Witnesses and front doors have never been the same.

Jehovah's witnesses are apocryphal, in that they are always preaching the world is coming to an end.  I distinctly remember hearing them preach the world was ending in 2000.  When they were back at my door in 2001 I asked, "How is it we are still here?"

In 1931 Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion in Chicago.

This monument says Grant Sedgwick Reynolds, does anyone know anything about it?

Mount Vernon

The National Cathedral in the process of being built.  When I toured the National Cathedral I was told it was built using medieval building methods so it might withstand the test of time as have European cathedrals.

Rose calls this "Lee House".  I believe it's Arlington.

The Washington Monument from the Lincoln Memorial

Beautiful double exposure

We're going from the White House to Churchill Downs

Maybe we got here by riverboat

There are two pictures of the same unidentified man on this Kentucky trip.  He is a friend they made on the journey?  If so, they never took pictures of someone like that before.  Rose was not one to write on the album, that was all Marian, and she was not on this trip.

I call these pictures Where am I?  Because I don't know.

Hillmanns albums come out on Tuesdays, next week we're back playing with Marian.
