The Hillmanns of Brooklyn 30

THE HILLMANNS OF BROOKLYN

CHAPTER 30

1926

WEST POINT and CAPE MAY

Marian was between her Junior and Senior year in the Summer of 1926, and the Hillmanns did a lot that year. In this album we journey to Cape May and Westpoint.

The back of this photo says "4:30 PM clear 4.5-100"

How often are we reminded the manner in which areas are settled is geography (water)?

Behold the Hillmanns looking at a captured German Periscope from World War I which, at that time, was referred to as the "Great War".  Couple this with the fact both Herman and Rose's fathers were born in Germany and both their mother's were born to German immigrants.

My father was born in 1942.  He said Herman, his grandfather told him that Herman was very unhappy when he started school, because the only language he spoke was German.  They spoke English in the schools of Manhattan, so Herman had to learn.  He found himself at a disadvantage.

My father also told me that after World War II Herman was ashamed to be German.

Hillmanns albums come out on Tuesdays. Next week we're going to a Manhattan beach party

THE HILLMANNS OF BROOKLYN

CHAPTER 29

1926

Erie Pennsylvania

Sometime between their trip to Philadelphia and the Erie Canal, the Hillmanns shared some time with this group. I think they are unidentified cousins.  Herman's mother, Emma, was born in Pennsylvania, to German immigrant parents. Her father, John, was born in 1811 in Bremen, Germany. He married Christina, who was born in 1833 in Schleswig-Holstein.

John and Christina had three children: Louisa 1851, Carl 1853 and Pauline in 1855 in Germany. Then they immigrated to Germania, Potter County, Pennsylvania. Germania was a small cross roads a land developer marketed as a paradise to German immigrants.

Herman's mother, Emma was born in Germania, Pennsylvania in 1865. Her brother, Henry, was born there in 1867. Three years later, in 1870, Papa John died. By the 1880 census Christina remarried and was residing, with her husband and youngest three children in Manhattan. Her two oldest children were married and living in Potter County, Pennsylvania.

In the last album we saw Herman, Rosie and Marian celebrating the United State's 150th birthday in Philadelphia.  I think they stopped to see Herman's relatives who remained in Pennsylvania.

Now, on to the Erie Canal

My father loves to watch locks.

Hillmanns albums come out on Tuesday.

The Hillmanns of Brooklyn

Chapter 28

1926 Philadelphia for the Sesquicentennial

I think it's pretty cool we all get to travel to Philly to celebrate the United State's 150th birthday.

You are looking at "1776 Street"

Torpedos

Indian Princess Inn

Rosie

If you made it all the way to Philadelphia, you should probably see Pittsburgh too.
